Hand holding what looks like a heavily modified Elfbar with electronic components protroding from its surface.

Heading north for Open Hardware Summit this year? Join NYC Resistor members Becky Stern, Kari Love, and friends for a talk on re-purposing discharged disposable vape parts. Becky will introduce the salvage process and how regulation had the unintended consequence of creating more e-waste, and Kari, David Rios, and Shuang Cai will talk about how they transformed them into rechargeable musical instruments!

Disposable vaping devices, like the ubiquitous Elfbar, are designed to become ubiquitous e-waste, but as much as the batteries are coated in sticky nicotine, they can, in fact, be repurposed for re-use. Like many contradictions in the production of electronics, this is due to a confluence of economic and political factors beyond just engineering concerns, which will be explored in this session.

The Open Hardware Summit is happening May 3rd and 4th in 2024. Tickets for Open Hardware Summit are available now. See you in Montreal!

Call for Artists text

Does your art beep? Does it jangle? Does it wiggle, twinkle, bellow, or mangle? Well buzz off, cyborg, that’s a different art show you’re looking for! (But stay tuned for our Interactive Show call for submissions!)

On April 20th, 2024, NYC Resistor is throwing a good, old-fashioned fundraiser party centered around a silent auction of donated art works. As a change of pace from our annual Interactive Show, this time we’re highlighting the paintings, sculptures, drawings, jewelry, and other non-interactive artworks of our members, friends, and contributing well-wishers.

Are you one of those well-wishers? Here’s the pitch: please donate some art. To submit a donation, please email [email protected] with the following info:

  • Title of your piece
  • Dimensions (length, width, thickness)
  • Format/materials used (e.g. painting, mixed media, screen print, etc)
  • Any transportation or display considerations
  • A photo of your piece
  • Suggested reserve price (if any)
  • Current location of your piece

Pickup can be arranged in the New York City area. If you are not local but still passionate about donating work to be auctioned, please let us know. Submissions close on Tuesday, April 2 to allow time for planning and setup.
